The U.S. Department of Veterans affairs has developed a range of mobile apps related to self-help and psycho-education. We have also included links to a few apps from other sources that may be helpful. Note: These apps are not intended to replace professional care.
PTSD Coach: "PTSD Coach has now been downloaded over 500,000 times in 115 countries around the world. The PTSD Coach app can help you learn about and manage symptoms that often occur after trauma."
Mindfulness Coach: "Practicing mindfulness means grounding yourself in the present moment. Mindfulness has been shown to be helpful for reducing stress and coping with unpleasant thoughts and emotions. Mindfulness Coach will help you practice mindfulness meditation."
AIMS for Anger Management: "AIMS is designed to help you manage anger and irritability."
Mood Coach: "Mood Coach is an app helps you learn and practice Behavioral Activation for managing mood. It can be used on its own or in combination with face-to-face health care. It is not intended to replace therapy for those who need it."
Stay Quit Coach: "Stay Quit Coach is designed to help with quitting smoking. It is intended to serve as a source of readily available support and information for adults who are already in treatment to quit smoking - to help them stay quit even after treatment ends. The app guides users in creating a tailored plan that takes into account their personal reasons for quitting. It provides information about smoking and quitting, interactive tools to help users cope with urges to smoke, and motivational messages and support contacts to help users stay smoke-free. Stay Quit Coach is designed to be used in conjunction with a clinical provider but may also be helpful as a self-management tool."
COVID Coach: "The COVID Coach app was created for everyone, including Veterans and Servicemembers, to support self-care and overall mental health during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic."
Breathe2Relax: "Breathe2Relax is a portable stress management tool which provides detailed information on the effects of stress on the body and instructions and practice exercises to help users learn the stress management skill called diaphragmatic breathing. Breathing exercises have been documented to decrease the body’s ‘fight-or-flight’ (stress) response, and help with mood stabilization, anger control, and anxiety management. Breathe2Relax can be used as a stand-alone stress reduction tool, or can be used in tandem with clinical care directed by a healthcare worker."
AA Meeting Guide: "Brought to you by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc., Meeting Guide is a free of charge app that provides meeting information from A.A. service entities in an easy-to-access format. Over 100,000 A.A. meetings are currently listed. "
NA Meeting Search: "NA Meeting Search is an application developed to help you locate Narcotics Anonymous (NA) Meetings anywhere around the world. Also bundled with this app are the daily Just For Today meditations. Websites and helplines for your area are also listed."
Remind: Designed for educational settings, Remind is a communication app that makes it easy for people to stay connected and communicate in real time.
